3855 USMC veteran, enlisted Sept 1941, discharged Mar 1945 from the Second Marine Division. Wounded on Guadalcanal and Saipan. Also fought on Tarawa.

Bill worked as a tanker truck driver for Standard oil during the years he was married to my mother. He married three times but only had children from his first marriage.

Back in those days they had not identified post traumatic stress disorder as a condition, and my father returned from the war having watched close friends die and being shot twice. Whenever he drank beer he would become easily angered, occasionally throwing things and yelling (but he never touched or harmed anyone when he was angry). My mother divorced my father on the grounds of mental cruelty. My father never touched an alcoholic drink from that time on. After the divorce he moved to the country in the Sierra Nevada mountains and worked as a heavy equipment operator for the State of California.

In the early 1960's he learned to fly on the G.I. bill. He flew a crop duster in the years before they knew how dangerous the chemicals were. This was in the days when pilots filled their own hoppers without protective equipment. He developed chronic health problems, stopped flying and went back to work driving heavy equipment until he died.

Died of heart attack. Buried in Chrokee Memorial Park, Lodi, CA.

3880 Virgil was mobilized with the Nebraska National Guard in October of 1940. He served in the Army 134th Infantry. He transferred to the Army Air Corps where he served as a Night Fighter pilot in the European Theater during 1944 - 1945. He flew British Beau fighters and Mosquitos.
Because he had been a fry cook at the Nebraska Student Union Grill, he was made a cook. He was a Staff Sgt. in charge of the kitchen when the 35th Division left Arkansas.
Soon after Pearl Harbor, Virg applied to the Army Air Corps pilot training program. He was accepted and trained at Santa Ana, King City, Taft, and graduated (got his wings) from Williams Air Force Base in Arizona in July 1943.
He was sent to the European Theater in June1944 where he trained in British air craft in North Africa. He was attached to the only American Night Fighter squadron flying British air craft in Italy and France. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters.
He returned to the United States after V E Day and was awaiting reassignment to the Pacific Theater until V-J Day.
He was honorably discharged in September 1945 as a First Lieutenant.
Virg graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy. He continued on to receive his Ph. D. in 1952. His professional life was spent as a wheat geneticist and breeder. He and his co-workers developed 28 varieties of wheat. These wheats dominated the Nebraska and U.S. wheat acreages for many years. He served as coordinator of research for U.S. D.A. for the Hard Red Winter Wheat region and had a co-appointment as professor at the University of Nebraska where he advised 25 doctoral students and 3 master's.
For 20 years he coordinated an International wheat research effort in about 37 countries.
He organized 5 International Wheat Conferences in Turkey, Yugoslavia, Spain, Brazil and Morocco. In June 2000 he was invited to be an opening speaker at the 6th International Wheat Conference in Budapest, Hungary.

3885 Virginia had passed a law which required all males between the ages of 15 and 50 to serve 2 years in the Virginia Militia. The tour of duty was generally 2 years. The Quakers opposed serving in the Militia and they would not pay taxes to support the War.

We find Jacob every year between 1747 and 1754 tax rolls. Jacob and other Quakers refused to pay their taxes and to serve in the militia.

It was recorded on 26 August 1754 that, "Leave is Granted to Peter Holland, James Turner, Jacob Presnell, William Stone, William Stone Jr., James Orrick, and J.Fite." Further, "To clear road from Goose Creek up Falling Mountain. The said Holland is appointed overseer, William Stone Sr. the assistant. The said mountain road to be known as Mobberley Road and the persons convent with this tithe (tax) to attend sd. Stone and Pate are appointed as surveyors from Ridge to Goose Creek."

It was recorded on 25 August 1755:
Phelps -vs- Jacob Presnell
Iden -vs- Jacob Presnell

Recorded on 12 September 1755:
Callaway -vs- Jacob Presnell
Phelps -vs- Jacob Presnell Phellps was the Tithe (tax) Lister, Callaway was a member of the court.

The word "Leave" was used because they would not pay taxes or serve in the militia, when granted leave, they would not be sentenced, rather, given leave, to construct roads.

Recorded on 19 November 1757, in the South Creek Quaker Monthly Meeting was that Jacob Presnell is appointed Chairman of the Goose Creek Quakers, a newly formed group that desired to migrate to the wilds of North Carolina.

On the "Tax Rolls" are the following families that moved to North Carolina before 1765, settled close to Back Creek in what is now Randolph County, North Carolina: (Presnell's married into many of these families)

William - James, John, Robert, Giles
Harvey - Michael Sr., Michael Jr., William, John
Richardson - Stephen, Thomas, John, Amus, Abel, Joseph
Hudson - Stephen, Thomas, Peter
Hayes - Mark, William
Atkinson - Richardson, Priegler
Green - John, Benjamin, Henry
Stone - William Sr., William Jr.

Furr - Joseph
