Notes |
- from Michael C. Presnell:
Interestingly, Thomas Presnell is born and died immediately following the Great Plague of England, which was the last major epideimc of the bubonic plague to occur in the Kingdom of England. It is estimated that the population of London in 1665 was about 460,000. It is thought that the 1665 Plague in England came from the Netherlands where the disease had been occurring intermittently since 1599. The dock areas outside London and the parish of St. Giles in the fields, where poor workers were crowded into ill-kept structures, are believed to be the first areas to be struck. It started in St Giles and the first victims were buried in the St. Giles churchyard. By September 1665, 8000 people were dying a week in London! By the end of the plague year there were 3,216 listed plague deaths in St Giles parish, which had fewer than 2,000 households. After the Restoration, the area was populated by Huguenot refugees who had fled persecution and established themselves as tradesmen and artisans, particularly in weaving and the silk trade.
