Benjamin Doty was born about 1735 in Middlesex County, New Jersey to Benjamin and Rachel Doughty. Although Doty was born in New Jersey, his parents also lived for a time in Orange County, New York. He married a woman named Mary about 1758. Some researchers suggest Mary’s full name was Mary Bush. Doty and his wife were a residents of Bernard's Township in Somerset County. Doty enlisted in the Somerset County Militia in 1775, at age 40. He left his wife and four sons to serve. Doty served as a private under Captain Benjamin Corey, leader of a company in Colonel Frederick Frelinghuysen’s Battalion. After the war, Doty and his wife moved to Wantage Township in Sussex County, NJ, where they raised 13 children (Benjamin, Jacob, Timothy, Nathaniel, Archelous, Abner, Ephraim, John, Willet, Isaac, Sarah Patterson, Mary Everett, Phebe Hunt). Doty died in 1802, at age 67. Samuel Vanfleet and William Elston prepared an inventory on Nov. 15, 1802. Judging from the date they appraised his belongings, Doty most likely died in October or November. According to the inventory of his estate, Doty had plenty of hay in the barn and stack to feed his horses, cows, young cattle, hogs and sheep. Wheat, rye, flax, potatoes, corn, buckwheat, beans, oats and flaxseed were grown on the Doty farm. Benjamin’s possessions were deemed to be worth $670.15 by the appraisers. Benjamin’s widow, Mary, and son, Isaac, accepted the inventory in court a few days later on November 18, 1802. Since Doty hadn’t written a will, Mary and Isaac requested they be appointed Administratrix and Administrator. Doty’s other sons, John and Nathan Everett vouched for Mary and Isaac’s abilities to manage Benjamin’s estate. It turns out there wasn’t enough money in Doty’s personal estate to pay his debts. So his family got permission from the Sussex Orphans Court to sell land to cover the debts. In the years before his death, Doty had acquired over 167 acres of land. After the family sold much of it to cover his debts, 72 acres of the tract remained in the Benjamin Doty estate and this is the property that would be divided among his children.
